Prologue:
A Bond Forged in Continuity, Dialogue, and Unwavering Trust
This foundation of trust culminated in my curation of his solo exhibition, Ashok Bhowmick, Fifty Years (1974 – 2024), at Kala Srot Art Gallery in Lucknow, commemorating fifty years of his artistic odyssey. That show was far more than a milestone marker; it was a deliberate assertion of artistic integrity in an era often dominated by fleeting trends and commercial imperatives. By situating his work within the expansive tapestry of Indian contemporary art, we illuminated an alternative narrative with one that diverged from the urban-centric, metropolitan-dominated histories, emphasizing instead the quiet power of empathy, authenticity, and endurance. Audiences were invited to witness how Bhowmick Da’s oeuvre, born from the peripheries of Kanpur and Azamgarh, challenged the elitist paradigms of art production and consumption.
Now, as I curate this comprehensive retrospective with Dhoomimal Gallery in Delhi, a venerable institution with its own storied legacy in nurturing Indian modernism. I find myself returning to this cherished association with renewed depth and ambition. This exhibition represents both an honour and a profound responsibility: to encapsulate six decades of an artist’s unyielding voice, one that has consistently prioritized truth over acclaim, conviction over convenience. For Ashok Da, this retrospective extends his “golden journey” beyond the fiftieth year, affirming the discipline, ethical rigor, and uncompromised vision that have defined his path. For me, it is the natural progression of a curatorial commitment that began in Lucknow, now amplified on Delhi’s grand stage, a city that has long served as the epicentre of India’s artistic discourses, debates, and transformations. In this space, Bhowmick Da’s work finds a fitting resonance, bridging regional roots with national significance, and inviting a new generation to engage with an artist who embodies the ethical imperatives of creation.
